THE VINEYARD
Chamisal was the first vineyard planted in the Edna Valley in 1973 and now contains 80 acres planted to 5 varieties and 25 clonal selections. The nearby Pacific ocean creates a long temperate growing season for exceptional hang time, which combines with the calcareous, clay-rich soil to produce fruit with exceptional intensity and complex flavors.

VINTAGE
2010 will go down as one of the coolest years in Californian history. A very chilly spring with significant frost events delayed budbreak 10-14 days behind normal. Due to cooler La Niña ocean temperatures, the summer was much cooler than average with the June coastal fog persisting into July and August. An extended heat wave in the last week of September gave us record-breaking heat, with temperatures exceeding 110°F for four days, allowing ripening to catch up a bit. The Grenache was harvested in late October, not quite ripe enough to create a red wine, but just ripe enough to create a beautiful and refreshing Rosé.

WINEMAKING
After picking at night, this Grenache was gently crushed the old-fashoined way – by foot – and remained on the skins for 12 hours to add color. The fruit was then pressed as it would be for a white wine, settling the juice for 24 hours before racking to another tank for fermentation at cool temperatures to maximize fresh fruit and ester production. We stabilized and bottled this wine very young to preserve its bright and refreshing youthfulness.

CLONAL SELECTION
This Rosé was created from a blend of Alban and Noir clones of Grenache that were selected for their combination of red fruit and spice.

TASTING NOTES

Classic Grenache Rosé characters of strawberries and cream abound on the nose with hints of watermelon candy and maraschino cherry. The palate shows more classic Grenache personality with ample red fruit and notes of wild anise which we attribute to our unique Chamisal spice terroir.
