This ruby colored Pinot Noir is an early bottling from our estate vineyard coming from two lots that show expressive red fruit out the gates. Opening with sweet aromas of cherry, cranberry and raspberry, the palate is balanced with slightly smokey notes of sandalwood and cedar box, leading into a bright, clean finish. Enjoy earlier than typical estate bottlings; now through 2020.
Chamisal was the first vineyard planted in the Edna Valley in 1973 and now contains 80 acres planted to 5 varieties and 25 clonal selections. The nearby Pacific ocean creates a long temperate growing season for exceptional hang time, which combines with the calcareous, clay-rich soil to produce fruit with exceptional intensity and complex flavors.
2014 started with a very warm, dry winter resulting in an early budbreak in mid-February. Continuous warmer than average temperatures throughout spring and summer provided even ripening with retention of acidity, and lack of harvest heat waves allowed for picking at perfect maturity, culminating in our earliest Harvest ever. Overall, this was a stunning vintage with excellent balance.
This wine is a selection from some of our newly planted Pinot Noir blocks on the Estate. Treated in the same manor as our Estate Pinot, the grapes were hand picked and hand sorted. All berries were then destemmed and gravity fed into small opentop fermentors. Cool fermentation temperatures were implemented to maximize fresh fruit characteristics, then. Following fermentation, the wine was aged in French oak barrels for 8 months.
This vintage, our Young Vines Pinot Noir consists of a selection coming predominantly from a new block of Clone 2A, a late ripening clone expressing forward fruit and a lighter structure than many of our Pinot clones. This clone was blended with our newly established clones Calera, 828 and 459 as well as a component of mature Clone 114.
