2015 Estate Pinot Gris
Ripe, effusive varietal aromas of white peach, Asian pear and green apple mingle with underlying floral notes and white pepper in this bright young wine. The palate balances acidity with sweet stonefruit and pineapple, offering an intensity and weight that are reminiscent of it’s Alsatian counterparts.
Chamisal was the first vineyard planted in the Edna Valley in 1973 and now contains 80 acres planted to 5 varieties and 25 clonal selections. The nearby Pacific ocean creates a long temperate growing season for exceptional hang time, which combines with the calcareous, clay-rich soil to produce fruit with exceptional intensity and complex flavors.
2015 began with another warm, dry winter. Rainy weather in the spring contributed to lower yields, further accelerating an already early harvest. Moderate temperatures in August allowed us to bring in fruit at a steady pace without any major heat spikes. Additionally, the early pick of the Pinot Gris kept the natural acidity moderately high, resulting in a beautiful unoaked Pinot Gris.
The Pinot Gris was night picked and hand sorted prior to whole cluster pressing. Then, it was cold settled and racked to a combination of stainless steel, neutral French oak and Acacia wood barrels for fermentation. This bottling was fermented at very cool temperatures using special yeasts. A portion of our 2015 Pinot Gris completed secondary malolactic fermentation and our final blend was a barrel selection of all four of our seperately vinified lots.
This wine is comprised of Alsace Clone and Clone 146, a clone we prize for its varietal expression and beautiful purity.
