2015 Estate Rosé
This rose gold colored wine is luscious and delicate. Aromas of ruby red grapefruit with hints of fresh cut thyme are abundant on the nose. The palate is bright and teems with notes of ripe papaya, tangerine zest and cantalope, finishing with balanced acidity and a touch of elegant limestone.
Chamisal was the first vineyard planted in the Edna Valley in 1973 and now contains 80 acres planted to 5 varieties and 25 clonal selections. The nearby Pacific ocean creates a long temperate growing season for exceptional hang time, which combines with the calcareous, clay-rich soil to produce fruit with exceptional intensity and complex flavors. Righetti Vineyard is a young vineyard planted in Pinot Noir and Chardonnay several miles north of Chamisal. Utilizing a combination of newer Dijon Clones and tried and true Heritage Californian Clones, this vineyard produces exceptional Pinot Noir off its southwest facing site.
2015 began with another warm, dry winter. Rainy weather in the spring contributed to lower yields, further accelerating an already early harvest. Moderate temperatures in August allowed us to bring in fruit at a steady pace without any major heat spikes. Additionally, the early pick of the Pinot Noir kept the natural acidity moderately high, resulting in a beautiful unoaked Rosé.
After harvesting and hand sorting, the Pinot Noir fruit was destemmed and gravity fed into open-top fermentors. After a short period of skin contact, we drew juice from the fermentors in the process of saignée (French for “bleed”). This juice was fermented in stainless steel tanks at very cool temperatures to retain fresh, crisp fruit and high-tone esters. The Rosé was bottled as soon as fermentation was complete.
This Rosé was made from Pinot Noir clone 2A from our Estate Vineyard. The freshness and fruit-forward characteristics of this block translated very well into a fresh and approachable Rosé Wine.
