Wine Profile
Tasting Notes
This is a beautiful example of cool climate Syrah, exhibiting complex aromas of wild blueberry, dark spice and firm earth tones. Notes of macerated blackberry and black plum swell on the palate, backed by hints of savory umami flavors, graham cracker and cherry coulis. Dark fruit and opulence on the palate are balanced by supple tannins and refreshing acid, leading into a long finish with hints of baking spice and wild strawberry. This wine will be best enjoyed from now until 2025.
The Vineyards
Chamisal was the first vineyard planted in the Edna Valley in 1973 and now contains 80 acres planted to 5 varieties and 25 clonal selections. The nearby Pacific ocean creates a long temperate growing season for exceptional hang time, which combines with the calcareous, clay-rich soil to produce fruit with exceptional intensity and complex flavors.
Vintage
2015 began with another warm, dry winter. Rainy weather in the spring contributed to lower yields, further accelerating an already early harvest. Moderate temperatures in August allowed us to bring in fruit at a steady pace without any major heat spikes. Additionally, the early pick of the Syrah kept the natural acidity moderately high, resulting in a beautiful wine.
Winemaking
The fruit for this wine was handpicked at night, then meticulously hand-sorted. Berries were then destemmed and gravity fed into small opentop fermentors. After a three-day cold soak, a long, cool fermentation was initiated using native yeasts. Gentle pumpovers were utilized to optimize extraction. Following fermentation, the wine was racked to French oak barrels for 16 months with minimal racking.
Clonal Selection
This tightly focused Syrah is predominantly made up of Clone 383, lending ample black berry fruit. A small amount of Clone 300 and Estrella River Clone were blended in, adding blueberry elements. The result is a balanced, fruitful wine with good acidity.
