Wine Profile
Tasting Notes
This salmon colored Rosé is luscious and delicate. Aromas of melon and strawberry with hints of fresh cut thyme are abundant on the nose. The palate is bright and teems with notes of ripe cantelope, orange zest and lychee, finishing with fresh acidity and a touch of elegant limestone.
The Vineyards
Chamisal was the first vineyard planted in the Edna Valley in 1973 and now contains 80 acres planted to 5 varieties and 25 clonal selections. The nearby Pacific ocean creates a long temperate growing season for exceptional hang time, which combines with the calcareous, clay-rich soil to produce fruit with exceptional intensity and complex flavors. Righetti Vineyard is a young vineyard planted in Pinot Noir and Chardonnay several miles north of Chamisal. Utilizing a combination of newer Dijon Clones and tried and true Heritage Californian Clones, this vineyard produces exceptional Pinot Noir off its southwest facing site.
Vintage
The normal rainfall in 2016 really helped the vines by flushing the root zone a little bit, and as a result, we saw higher grape quality. Cool temperatures in August allowed us to bring in fruit at a steady pace without any major heat spikes. Additionally, the early pick of the Pinot Noir kept the natural acidity moderately high, resulting in a beautiful unoaked Rosé.
Winemaking
After harvesting and hand sorting, the Pinot Noir fruit was whole cluster pressed and gravity fed into open-top fermentors. After a short period of skin contact, we drew juice from the fermentors in the process of saignée (French for “bleed”). This juice was fermented in stainless steel tanks at very cool temperatures to retain fresh, crisp fruit and high-tone esters. The Rosé was bottled as soon as fermentation was complete.
Clonal Selection
This Rosé was made from Pinot Noir clones 2A and 115 from our Estate Vineyards. The freshness and fruit-forward characteristics of these blocks translated very well into an approachable Rosé Wine.
